Patchcords

What is a fibre optic patchcord?

Patchcords, also known as patch cables, are short lengths of fibre optic cable terminated with connectors at both ends. They are used to connect network devices to patchpanels, switches and other network infrastructure components. Patchcords play a key role in ensuring stable and reliable connections in fibre optic networks.

Patchcord types fibre optics

SC/APC - LC/APC - A combination of SC connectors with APC finish and LC connectors with APC finish, offering low reflection loss.

LC/UPC - LC/APC - A combination of LC connectors with UPC and APC finishes, ensuring low insertion and reflection losses.

LC/PC - LC/PC - PC-finished LC connectors, popular in various network applications due to their reliability.

LC/APC - LC/APC - LC connectors with APC finish, ideal for installations requiring high signal quality.

LC/UPC - LC connectors with UPC finish, featuring low insertion loss.

LC/UPC - SC/APC - A combination of LC connectors with UPC finish and SC connectors with APC finish, used in applications requiring different connector types.

LC/UPC - SC/UPC - A combination of LC connectors with UPC finish and SC connectors with UPC finish, offering low insertion loss.

How do I choose the right fibre optic patchcords?

  1. Connector type: Ensure that the patchcords you choose are compatible with the devices to which they will be connected. For example, if your device requires SC/APC and LC/APC connectors, the appropriate choice would be Extralink SC/APC - LC/APC Patchcord.
  1. Insertion loss requirements: For installations where minimising signal loss is key, choose patchcords with a UPC finish, such as Extralink LC/UPC - LC/APC Patchcordwhich ensures low insertion losses.
  1. Type of installation: If you plan to install in an environment with high levels of optical interference, consider using APC-finished patchcords such as Extralink LC/APC - LC/APC Patchcord. Thanks to their bevelled finish, they provide better reflective performance.
  1. Application: For installations where reliability and low costs are required, the ideal choice will be Extralink LC/PC - LC/PC Patchcord. It is a versatile and cost-effective solution, perfect for a wide range of applications.
  1. Compatibility with existing infrastructure: Check which connectors are used in your existing infrastructure to ensure compatibility. For example, if you already have SC connectors installed, choose a suitable SC patchcord such as the Extralink LC/UPC - SC/UPC Patchcord, which provides low insertion loss and is compatible with many network devices.
