What is an ONT or ONU?

ONT - is a key device in fibre optic technology that is used to receive the optical signal from the fibre optic network and convert it into an electrical signal that can be used by end devices such as computers, televisions, and telephones. The ONT acts as a 'bridge' between the fibre optic cable and the local network in the home or office, enabling high-speed internet, digital TV, and VoIP telephone services.

ONT types

  • ONT with single Ethernet port - the simplest model, often used in small households where there is no need for extensive network infrastructure.
  • ONT with multiple Ethernet ports - More advanced models that can support several devices simultaneously. Ideal for larger homes or offices where multiple devices require internet access.
  • ONT with WiFi - These devices have a built-in WiFi module, which allows the devices to be connected wirelessly. This solution is convenient when we do not want to use cables at home.
  • ONT with VoIP function - supports Internet telephony, so you can connect a traditional telephone to the fibre-optic network.

How to choose the right ONT?

Choosing the right ONT depends primarily on the needs of the user and the specific location in which the device will operate. For example, in homes where simplicity and reliability are key, it may work well Extralink Elara ONT basic features such as a single GPON port and a 1000Mbps Ethernet port. Where higher performance and the ability to connect multiple devices is important, consider a device with additional Ethernet ports and an advanced chipset to ensure a stable and fast connection.

There are also situations where we need additional features, such as a built-in router or network traffic management, in which case the following will work best Extralink Luna V3 ONT. Such devices can prove indispensable in more complex home or office networks, where not only internet access but also the optimisation of the entire network's performance is important.
