Fibre optic cables

What is fibre optic cable?

Fibre optic cables are cables used to transmit data over long distances using light pulses. Thanks to their construction, based on glass or plastic fibres, fibre optic cables offer exceptional throughput and resistance to electromagnetic interference, making them ideal for telecommunications infrastructure, data centres and building-to-building connections.

Fibre optic cable types

  • Single-mode - designed for long-distance transmission, ideal for long-distance and intercontinental connections.
  • Multimode - used over shorter distances, e.g. in buildings, more economical, but with limited range.
  • External - weather-resistant for outdoor installation.
  • Internal - Lightweight and flexible, for indoor installation.
  • Patchcord- short cables terminated with connectors, used for direct connection of devices in local area networks.

How do I choose the right fibre optic cable?

  1. Transmission range: For long-distance connections, single-mode cables, which offer minimal signal attenuation, are the best choice. On the other hand, for shorter distances, for example in buildings, multimode cables, which are more economical, may be a better option.
  1. Installation environment: If the installation will be outdoors, it is advisable to choose outdoor cables that are resistant to weather conditions and mechanical damage. For indoor installations, indoor cables that are lighter and easier to install will be better.
  1. Network capacity: Depending on your bandwidth requirements, you need to choose the right type of cable. Single-mode cables are ideal for networks requiring high bandwidth over long distances, while multimode cables will work well for local networks with moderate loads.
  1. Connectors and compatibility: Ensure that the selected fibre optic cable is compatible with the connectors and network devices you are using. For direct connections between devices, consider using patchcords.
  1. Transmission type: If you plan to transmit high-bandwidth signals such as video or data in data centres, consider OM4 multimode cables, which offer better transmission quality over short distances.
