Adapters

What is a fibre optic adapter?

Fibre optic adapters are key components used in telecommunications infrastructure to connect and match different types of fibre optic connectors. They enable the connection of two fibre optic cables or devices equipped with different connector types, which is essential to ensure the continuity and quality of data transmission in optical networks. Adapters are often used in patch panels, enclosures and other optical fibre network components.

Adapter types fibre opticch

  • LC/APC: LC-type adapters with an APC (Angled Physical Contact) finish are used for connections requiring minimal reflection losses. The APC finish ensures better signal quality, which is particularly important in precision fibre optic installations.
  • SC/APC: SC/APC adapters are similar to LC/APC, but have a larger connector. They are commonly used in broadband networks where high signal quality is required.
  • SC/UPC: SC/UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) adapters have a flat finish that provides low insertion loss, but higher reflection loss compared to APC. They are often used in installations where reflection is not a critical issue.
  • Simplex/Duplex: Adapters can be Simplex, which allows a single fibre to be connected, or Duplex, which allows two fibres to be connected at the same time. Duplex is used where bi-directional data transmission is required.

How to choose the right adapter fibre optic?

Choosing the right fibre adapter depends on several key factors that need to be considered when designing and maintaining a fibre network:

  1. Connector type: Adapters must be compatible with the type of connectors used in the network. For example, if your network uses LC connectors, the appropriate choice would be an adapter Extralink LC/APC. If, on the other hand, you are working with SC connectors, choose an adapter Extralink SC/UPC for standard applications.
  1. Reflective loss requirements: If it is crucial in your network to minimise reflection losses, for example in applications with high signal quality requirements, choose adapters with an APC finish. Adapter Extralink SC/APC is ideal for such applications.
  1. Transmission type: For applications requiring bi-directional data transmission, adapters such as the following are recommended Extralink SC/UPC Duplexwhich allow a two-fibre connection. If you need a single-fibre connection, a Simplex adapter will suffice.
  1. Installation environment: Ensure that the chosen adapter is suitable for the environment in which it will be used. Adapters must be durable and able to withstand the conditions in which they will operate to ensure the reliability of the network.
